Arlene Vella, (née Whittaker), of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.
She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Joseph Vella, whom she deeply missed. Arlene was the devoted mother of Alison, Gary and his wife, Lil, Scott and his wife, Kim, and Shannon and her partner, Eric. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Rhianna, Melanie, Amanda, Jack, Cooper, Brady, Orly, Jackie, and Lisa, each of whom brought immeasurable joy to her life. She was also a cherished great-grandmother to Zoe, Griffin, Samuel, and Michael III.
She is also lovingly remembered by her brothers, Edward and his wife, Gayle, and Vincent, with whom she shared a close and lifelong bond.
Throughout her career, Arlene owned and operated hotel gift shops, where her warm personality and genuine interest in people made a lasting impression on countless visitors. She delighted in meeting travelers from around the world, listening to their stories, and making everyone feel welcome. Arlene and Joseph shared a love of travel and created countless treasured memories exploring together. Of all the places they visited, Mystic, Connecticut, held a special place in their hearts. Drawn by its coastal charm, peaceful beauty, and welcoming community, it was the place they dreamed of calling home in retirement.
A devoted animal lover, Arlene had a special affection for cats. Throughout her life, they brought her comfort, companionship, and happiness, and she never missed an opportunity to care for them or lend a helping hand to animals in need.
Above all else, Arlene's greatest joy was her family. She will be remembered for her unconditional love, unwavering generosity, and infectious warmth. Her gentle spirit and compassionate heart touched countless lives, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
Her family finds comfort in knowing that she is reunited with Joseph and that the beautiful love they shared continues for eternity.
A private service will be held for the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Arlene's memory to Thyra's Sanctuary, a fitting tribute to her lifelong love and compassion for cats.
