Obituary

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of David J. Livelli, who departed this world peacefully on April 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Dave's journey began when he met the love of his life, Maria, at Shop-Rite, where their paths first crossed—he was 18, she was 16. From that day forward, they walked through life hand in hand, sharing over 60 years of unwavering love, laughter, and partnership.

A man of remarkable intellect, Dave possessed a tremendous wealth of knowledge that never ceased to amaze those around him. Whether it was a leaky faucet, a complex gadget, or the best product to buy, he researched everything with precision and passion. He had a gift for understanding the technical world, always eager to learn something new, and generously shared his wisdom with anyone who needed it.

Prior to his retirement, Dave taught for thirty-nine years as a mathematics teacher at Lyndhurst High School. For twenty-five years, he was the heart and soul of the Lyndhurst bowling team, serving as a beloved coach and mentor. He also coached the golf club and advised the chess club, encouraging students to challenge themselves, compete with integrity, and find joy in their pursuits.

Beyond his dedication to coaching, Dave enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He was an avid bowler and golfer, a devoted New York Yankees fan, and a true cigar aficionado who appreciated the fine pairing of a good stogie with a smooth scotch.

He and Maria traveled often, creating beautiful memories from the Borgata to the Bellagio, savoring lobster in Maine, enjoying the sun in Florida and soaking in the tranquility of the Outer Banks. Whether he was in a bustling casino or relaxing by the sea, Dave embraced life fully, with warmth, curiosity, and style.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, laughter, and loyalty. Dave will be remembered not only for his brilliant mind and generous spirit but also for the way he made everyone feel seen, heard, and valued.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Maria (nee Esposito) Livelli, devoted father of David Livelli, Jr. and his wife Suzanne, Kevin Livelli and his wife Susan, and Laura Livelli and her husband Ryan Patterson. Dear brother of Elaine Stella and her husband Michael. Loving Papa of Dana, David III, Andrew, Sarah, Anthony, Nicholas, Sophia, and Norah. Great grandfather of Parker. Brother-in-law of Arlene and JohnSanzari and Theresa Esposito. Cherished uncle of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Best friend of Ed and Larry. Devoted friend of many and mentor to former students who were forever touched by his presence.

A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd from 4 - 8 PM at Costa Memorial Home Boulevard and Central Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights, where stories will be shared. Funeral from Costa Memorial Home Boulevard and Central Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights on Wednesday, April 23rd at 9:30 AM. Funeral Liturgy from the Church of the Assumption of Our Blessed Lady in Wood-Ridge at 10:30 AM. Interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN. 38105 would be appreciated. The family asks that you raise a glass of good scotch, pay it forward with an act of kindness, or pass along a piece of knowledge - just as David would have done.
