Domenick J.
Mancini
August 18, 1938 — May 31, 2025
Domenick J. Mancini, 86, a lifelong resident of Hackensack, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31, 2025, in his childhood home.
Affectionately known as Don, he was born in 1938 to Nicola and Ida Mancini, and was a proud graduate of Hackensack High School and a volunteer veteran of the National Guard. Don embarked on his real estate management career in the early 1960s at Sanzari Enterprises. In the mid-1980s, he ventured out on his own, notably managing the Airport 17 building in Hasbrouck Heights, where he met his devoted companion, Lydia Crouch.
Don was known for his impeccable style and affinity for luxury cars, yet he was equally at ease in faded jeans, meticulously caring for his house and yard. A true fixture of Hackensack's First Ward, he could often be seen sweeping the street in front of his home each morning before changing into a bespoke suit and driving his Cadillac to work.
Don possessed an extraordinary memory of Hackensack, able to recall details about every corner of the city and its residents. He was a kind and insatiably curious man who genuinely connected with people from all walks of life, from his newspaper delivery person to City Hall officials. He seemingly knew everyone and over his lifetime he amassed an extensive collection of date-stamped business cards, chronicling decades of forging connections across Bergen County and beyond. Don was also unfailingly generous, quietly assisting anyone who came to him in need.
A genuine character, he was loyal, cranky, gregarious, stubborn, compassionate, meticulous, hilarious, and was adored by his fond though sometimes exasperated family and friends. He kept everything, from newspaper clippings to wrapping paper, and didn't believe in throwing anything out until it had completely outlived its usefulness, including a fraying decades-old couch that had to be 'lovingly' removed from the house before it destroyed his back.
Don found joy in yard work, home repair, the music of Frank Sinatra, diner breakfasts, keeping an eye out on the neighborhood and spending time with the family he built with Lydia and her children. He also cherished his relationships with his neighbors, the Giograndes, Petrocellis, and Acevedos, and a close circle of trusted friends.
Despite his wide array of interests and acquaintances, Don was a private person. He was happiest at home, sitting in his yard, enjoying a cigar while reading The Bergen Record front-to-back with his beloved cat, Honey, by his side.
An all-around good man, Don will be profoundly missed by many.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Crouch; his cousin, Raymond Panfile and family; and many friends. He was predeceased by his cherished companion, Lydia Crouch, and cousins Laura Triano, Marie Panfili George, and Orlando (Dit) Panfile.
