April 23, 1930 — April 9, 2022
Hon. Harry Hutman Chandless, Jr. 91, of Hasbrouck Heights passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
Harry was born on April 23, 1930 to Harry Chandless Sr. and Helen Cathryn Nixon. He lived nearly his entire life in Hasbrouck Heights, where he was active in politics, government and numerous civic organizations and had an extraordinarily positive impact on countless lives in the process.
In 1951, Harry became the youngest elected member to the Bergen County Republican Committee. Around that time he also founded the Bergen County Young Republican Club, for which he would serve as President and Solicitor. Among other roles, he was also the former Hasbrouck Heights municipal chairman.
Harry graduated at the top of his class from Columbia College and Columbia Law School, where he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Admitted to the bar in 1955, he served as Hasbrouck Heights Borough Prosecutor from 1958 – 1966, when he was appointed Municipal Judge. He held that position for 36 years, setting a record for the longest continuous serving judge in New Jersey.
In 1971, Harry also organized the Save the Ocean Society to successfully block the construction of a floating nuclear power plant off the NJ coast.
He was involved in multiple service and professional organizations, including as Past President of the HH Lions Club, Deacon in the First Reformed Church of HH, member of the Euclid Masonic Lodge and Life Member of the Bergen County Bar Association.
Harry had a brilliant mind, a contagious sense of humor, 1001 uses for duct tape and most of all an amazing heart. He is survived by his adoring children Kathryn, Barbara and Hank, as well as ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish his memory.
