Obituary

James Van Dongen 82, of Fort Myers, Florida, and Hasbrouck Heights, formerly of Lodi, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on December 30 after a long and courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

A proud U.S. Army Veteran, Jim lived a life defined by devotion—to his family, his work, and the countless friends and clients whose lives he touched.

Jim was the beloved husband of Donna (née Roberts) Van Dongen, his partner in life for over 55 years. He was the devoted father of Karen Van Dongen of Hasbrouck Heights; Susan and Raymond Nafash of Park Ridge; Kristine and Savino Gervasio of Paramus; and John and Maggie Van Dongen of Wayne.  To his grandchildren—Sabina, Lilianna, Angelina, Annistyn, Angelica, and Michael—he was "Pop-pop," a source of endless warmth, gentleness, and quiet wisdom. Their lives are forever brightened by his love.

Jim is predeceased by his parents, James and Mary (née Super), and his stepmother Marjorie (née Heerschap) Van Dongen.

A graduate of Rutger's University and Certified Public Accountant, Jim connected with people easily—colleagues, clients, neighbors, and friends. His integrity and professionalism earned him trust, but it was his kindness and genuine interest in helping others that truly left a mark.

Jim cherished the simple joys of life: time spent with family, coaching his children's youth athletic teams, following his favorite sports (forever a Mets fan), the companionship of pets, gardening, traveling and the thoughtful art of investing. Above all, he loved being active. Whether playing tennis with family or friends, he approached the game with enthusiasm, laughter, and a competitive spirit that never faded.

Visitation on Saturday, January 3rd from 2 - 5 PM at Costa Memorial Home Boulevard and Central Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights. Private cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations in Jim's memory be made to the Bergen County Animal Shelter or to MSKCC in support of Medullary Thyroid Cancer research.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who supported us throughout this journey.
