Obituary

Joan Ann Spaldo of Hasbrouck Heights passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, December 27, 2021, attended by her loving sister, Toni. Born on June 20, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York, she lived 90 full years, a milestone her family gathered to joyously celebrate in the backyard of the house that was the family home for nearly 80 years on Central Avenue this past summer.

Joan was a graduate of St Mary's High School in Rutherford, but she was most fiercely proud of her alma mater, Fordham University, where she earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in education and teaching, earning Summa Cum Laude. She dedicated her life to education, teaching in the Teaneck school system for 39 years, primarily at Hawthorne Elementary School, as well as others. Her devotion to her Catholic faith made her a dedicated parishioner of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Rosary Society and choir. Joan tirelessly served the parish community.

She was also a member of the Republican Club, Leisure Club, Contemporary Club and Friends of the Library all in Hasbrouck Heights.

She was the loving sister of the late Louis C. Spaldo and the late Rosalyn A. Grant. She is survived by the baby sister she adored, Antoinette A. Brown. Although she never had children of her own, she was like a mother to her 14 nieces and nephews and 32 great nieces and nephews, for all of whom she never missed sending a birthday card.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Costa Memorial Home, 170 Central Avenue, (corner of Boulevard) Hasbrouck Heights, on Sunday, January 2, 2022, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church at 10 am on Monday, January 3. Internment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Saddle Brook.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Several Sources Charity — www.severalsources.org — a charity that was near and dear to her heart or to Fordham University School of Education in memory of Joan Spaldo, would be appreciated. Masks are required upon entering the funeral home.
