John J. Lombardo 75, a thirty-eight year resident of of Oradell formerly of Hasbrouck Heights passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026. He was predeceased by his parents, Katherine and Charles Lombardo, Sr. and his brother, Charlie.
John graduated from Hasbrouck Heights High School in 1969, where he was a star athlete and later was inducted into the Hasbrouck Heights Hall of Fame with the 1968 Football Team. He loved boxing, his serious gym routines, and later played Rugby with a Montclair Club team.
He continued his football career at C.W. Post College and then on to Montclair State University where he received his B.A. and M.A . degrees.
He was a proud 50 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825. John worked 30 years, in all the elements, as a heavy construction land surveyor, laying out huge portions of the Meadowlands, Weehawken and Edgewater. At times he would survey the wetlands by boat.
In his "spare" time, he coached high school football starting in Saddle Brook, and then at River Dell High School in Oradell as a Freshman coach and eventually becoming Head Varsity Coach for 2 years. It was a job he loved, forming many meaningful relationships with the young men he coached and a satisfaction as they grew and went on with their lives.
John earned his Professional Land Surveyor license (PLS) and moved on to become County Surveyor for Bergen County. Along with his wife Cheryl, formed Lombardo & Lombardo, LLC and together with Cheryl as rod man completed almost 1000 property surveys. He ended his long career as a Bridge and Road Inspector for Passaic County, retiring in 2019.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Cheryl (nee Landi) Lombardo, his beloved daughter, Lindsey Lombardo and many long time friends. Not to be forgotten is his dearest little black dog, Milly, and of course a certain 1968 black Chevelle.
He loved birds and butterflies and never ceased to be amazed. He had the uncanning ability of spotting hummingbirds.
Visitation on Monday, August 31st from 4 - 8 PM at Costa Memorial Home Boulevard and Central Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights. Funeral Liturgy from Corpus Christi R.C. Church 260 Boulevard in Hasbrouck Heights on Tuesday, September 1st at 10 AM. (All to meet at church). A private cremation will follow.
