Obituary

Julia "Judy" M. Rostkowski (nee Gorkowski) 93, of Hasbrouck Heights was reunited with her beloved husband Paul on April 17, 2021. She was born in Brooklyn, NY and lived in Hasbrouck Heights for 70 years. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 57 years, (2003) the "love of her life", Paul. From the day of their marriage forward, her life was blessed with love, family and joy. A happenstance of WWII happily led her to her destiny which began when, as a high school student, Julia was given an assignment to send an encouraging letter to an anonymous soldier. That letter along with the packaged gift of candy would blessedly find its way across the world into the barracks of Paul, the soldier from Lodi, NJ who captured her heart. While stationed in the Pacific during the war their letters of love flowed between the oceans. Julia and Paul then continued their love story and married when the war ended in 1946. From that day forward Judy would often talk about her blessings and good luck in her marriage to this wonderful man. Julia's world as a loving wife, mother and homemaker blossomed as she and Paul began their life together. While Paul was employed as a television broadcast engineer, Julia worked as an esthetician and later as an aviation blueprint specialist at Robinson Aviation in Teterboro, NJ. Julia spent her life continually providing joy and looking out for the well-being of everyone in her family. She had a deep passion for hostessing famous family parties with an unbridled enthusiasm which came from entertaining her family and friends. While raising her children, Julia happily spent many hours serving as an officer of the PTA of Euclid School, Hasbrouck Heights Contemporary Club, Scout Leader and a volunteer teacher's aide at Corpus Christi School. Later in life, she volunteered to teach English as a Second Language. As a young mother she founded the neighborhood "Jolly Girls" where she organized monthly meetings of cheer with her friends. Full of a quick-wit and creativity; she was an artist, an avid reader, (particularly mysteries), a spectacular cook specializing in all ethnic foods (particularly Italian food), master holiday party planning arranger, gardener and interior designer, as well as a seamstress for her daughters. Julia loved traveling; she and her husband Paul and family members traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe by car, train, ship and plane. Her true passion always remained that of spending summer days at her cheerful, sunny, sandy Pt. Pleasant, NJ beach house. At the beach house, she spent many hours laughing while playing board games, jumping the waves, creating culinary delights and "walking the boards ", while embracing the company of her family amidst the sound of the ocean. Julia, a faithful parishioner of Corpus Christi R.C. Church , lived her life with a deep faith and a great appreciation of others. She could be found sitting and saying the rosary throughout the day and was a past member of the Corpus Christi Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Hasbrouck Heights Seniors, where she enjoyed monthly meetings, dancing, meeting new friends and sharing a warm pleasant smile with her fellow members. Loving and devoted mother of Jana Thorson, Debi and Clark Foreid, Paul and Kirsten Rostkowski. Devoted "Nan" to Robert and Margaret Stone, Erik and Monika Thorson, Jordan Thorson and fiance David Muehling, P.J. and Abby Rostkowski. Adoring great grandmother of Indiana and Brooklyn Stone, her namesake Julia Thorson and Ellie Thorson with whom she spent many cheerful hours in the company of their sports events, laughter, pranks and care of their amusing pets. Cherished sister of Frank and Rosalie Gorkowski and Hank and Cindy Gorkowski. She is also survived by John Thorson and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Frances Gorkowski, and her infant son, Paul. Her legacy is her gift that she brought to her family of joy, kindness and love. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to her angelic caretakers, Josephine, Liz and Helena who helped her enjoy moments of life in the past several months. Mom, we love you…when you get to heaven, give Daddy a huge hug, we all miss him terribly but we're happy you're back in each other's arms. Funeral from Costa Memorial Home Boulevard and Central Ave. Hasbrouck Heights on Wednesday, April 21st at 8:30 AM. Funeral Liturgy from Corpus Christi R.C. Church in Hasbrouck Heights at 9:30 AM. Interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Visitation Tuesday, April 20th from 1-4 PM at the funeral home.
